We hear it in speeches, in news debates, in international forums, and even in everyday conversations. The economy is growing, our diplomatic presence is stronger, and the world seems to be paying attention to India in a way it perhaps never did before.

And as a young Indian, it genuinely feels good to see that. There is a sense that the country is no longer standing quietly on the sidelines of global conversations. India is speaking, negotiating, mediating, and sometimes even leading. Whether it is climate discussions, geopolitical tensions, technology, or trade, India is now expected to have a position.

But sometimes I wonder if we ask ourselves an honest question: are we actually ready for the kind of global leadership we are aspiring to?

Because rising in the world is not just about pride or headlines. It brings responsibility, pressure, and expectations.

If India wants to play a bigger role globally, then we also have to confront our internal realities honestly. A rising nation cannot ignore its own contradictions. We cannot celebrate global recognition while pretending domestic challenges don’t exist.

For example, we talk about becoming a five-trillion-dollar economy, and that ambition is important. But economic growth alone doesn’t define leadership. A country that wants global influence also needs strong institutions, high-quality education, efficient governance, and a population that is empowered to contribute productively.

The truth is, India has immense potential but also immense work to do.

We are a country that produces some of the best engineers, entrepreneurs, scientists, and diplomats in the world. At the same time, we still struggle with basic issues like urban planning, infrastructure gaps, bureaucratic inefficiencies and uneven access to quality education. Both realities exist at the same time.

And that’s okay, every rising nation goes through that phase. The real question is whether we are honest enough to acknowledge it.

Sometimes nationalism in India becomes defensive. The moment someone points out a problem, the response becomes emotional. But mature patriotism doesn’t ignore problems; it confronts them with confidence. A nation that wants global respect cannot behave insecurely.

Global leadership requires self-awareness.

Look at the expectations the world already has of India. When conflicts arise, many countries expect India to act as a diplomatic bridge. When discussions about global supply chains happen, India is expected to be a reliable economic partner. When conversations around the Global South take place, India is expected to represent the voice of developing nations.

These are not small expectations. They come with pressure.

And that pressure will only increase if India continues growing economically and strategically. Power always comes with responsibility. The more influential a country becomes, the more carefully it has to act, diplomatically, economically and politically.

For young Indians like me, this is where the conversation becomes important. Because global leadership is not something that only diplomats and prime ministers handle. It eventually depends on the strength of the society itself, its workforce, its thinkers, its entrepreneurs, its administrators, and its citizens.

A strong nation is not built only in parliament or foreign offices. It is built in universities, research labs, startups, courts, media institutions, and public administration.

If India is truly going to play a leading role in the world over the next few decades, then our generation cannot simply celebrate the idea of India rising. We have to prepare ourselves to sustain that rise.

That means becoming more serious about competence. About policy. About governance. About innovation. About global awareness. It means understanding that nationalism is not just pride in India’s past or excitement about its future, it is responsibility in the present.

Because the truth is, global leadership is not a title you declare for yourself. It is a role that others expect you to perform consistently.

And if India wants to be taken seriously as a global leader, then we must be ready to match ambition with capability.

As young Indians, we are lucky to be living in a time when the country is clearly moving forward. But that also means the expectations from our generation will be much higher than those before us.

India Rising is a powerful idea.

Now the real challenge is proving that we are ready for it.
