The name derived from the Devi Kanya Kumari temple that is located in the city, Kanyakumari has been a town since the sangam period and is a popular tourist destination. Also famously known for its pearl fishery, as identified by Alexendria, the Chief eastern emporium of the Roman Empire, it has also been a great center for art and religion for centuries.
